“Hehehe…” Quintus lowered his head, a quiet chuckle escaping him.
“Hahaha…”
His laughter grew louder, resonating across the battlefield and freezing everyone in place.

Adolph gazed at his son in silence, an unfamiliar sensation creeping over him. Quintus had always been obedient, never questioning his father’s commands. But now, standing before him, he no longer seemed like the same boy. He had grown–not just physically, but in spirit.
“Dad–No, from now on, I should address you as General!”
Quintus suddenly lifted his head, locking eyes with his father, who sat atop his warhorse. His voice was clear and unwavering. “If you insist on turning against our country and invading Zovince, then I will be your first enemy!”
Adolph’s expression darkened, his anger simmering beneath the surface. After a long pause, he finally spoke, his voice cold. “Why must you be so foolish? What our family is doing is not treason. We are fighting to make Chanaea stronger, to ensure that we never again have to bow our heads to others. One day, we will stand above all nations!”
“That’s nonsense!”
Quintus‘ voice rang out across the battlefield. “Do you even understand why Chanaea is called Chanaea? It’s because it belongs to its people–not to those who seize power through force! Unlike nations ruled by a handful of elites, our country’s leadership should be chosen by its citizens!”
He took a deep breath, his gaze firm. “Besides, I am now the newly appointed Holy Guardian, a general of the Wolf Warrior Unit! My duty is to defend Mackenzie and the Wolf Warrior Unit, and I will fight to the end against those who threaten them!”
His words carried a power that reignited the spirits of the soldiers around him. The Wolf Warrior and Zovince’s defenders, though exhausted, found new strength. They clenched their weapons, standing taller, fueled by the belief that they were on the right side of history.
Even Adolph felt a tremor in his heart. For a fleeting moment, emotions flickered across his face—a mix of disappointment, conflict, and something else, something almost like relief.
“Quintus, you are still too young. You don’t understand that the majority is not always right. True wisdom often belongs to the few,” he said, his voice steadying. “I don’t want to fight you. I want you to stand with me. Help Great Master Salem claim his rightful place as this nation’s ruler!”
“Support him?”
Quintus let out a short laugh, shaking his head. Why would he align himself with an aging warlord when he could stand beside the one who truly inspired him? Why would anyone choose otherwise?
However, he still asked, “Dad, didn’t you say Zelinsky Family was backing you? Why are you suddenly siding with the Summerton Family? What’s the connection between them?”
Adolph remained composed. Despite the reinforcements pouring in, his forces still held the upper hand.

“Quintus, you know that the Four Great Aristocratic Families of Zovince are always shifting in power, don’t you?”
Quintus gave a small nod.
Adolph continued, “Years ago, Great Master Salem was engaged to Catherine.”
“What?!” Quintus blinked in shock. “They’re both old, but Salem is way older!”
“Age has never been the deciding factor in political marriages,” Adolph replied smoothly. “Catherine’s brother, Ezra, studied abroad with Salem and was influenced by foreign political ideologies.”
Quintus scoffed. “So foreign ideas are automatically ‘advanced‘? Are you saying Chanaea has no innovation of its own?”
“I’m not here to debate with you!” Adolph cut him off sharply. “I’m telling you the truth. The Zelinsky, Lannister, Sheffield–Grey, and Summerton families struck a deal long ago. They decided to divide power among themselves.
“But the real control will always rest with Zelinsky’s vast political network. Salem may play emperor for now, but in the end, he’s just a pawn in a much bigger game.”
Quintus chuckled. “You’re right about one thing.”
Adolph thought his son had finally grasped the bigger picture, that he was beginning to see reason.
However, Quintus added, “I don’t care about any of that. Your plans will fail. My job is to make sure you don’t set foot in Zovince until the people of Chanaea choose their own leader!”
“You fool!” Adolph snapped. “Can’t you see reality? If you insist on standing against us, you will die here! You and your handful of soldiers are no match for our forces!”
“We’ll see about that.” Quintus‘ eyes gleamed with defiance, his stance unwavering.
“Quintus! Have you forgotten your family name? Will you truly abandon everything your grandfather and I built? Are you turning your back on your own blood?”
Adolph’s voice trembled with fury–his usual composure shattered.
Quintus, however, remained steadfast. With a confident smile, he declared, “It’s Lenoir, and I will always honor my family. But before that, I stand as a citizen of Chanaea! I am a general of the Wolf Warrior, a revered Holy Guardian!
“My first duty is to my country, not my lineage! If my family stands against Chanaea, then as a Wolf Warrior general, I will fight to the death for my homeland and for the Saintess!”
Adolph’s body stiffened.
At that moment, the battlefield erupted with cries of defiance.
“Hold the line! No one will shake Chanaea’s foundation!”

Some wielded firearms while others drove makeshift combat vehicles–tractors, bulldozers, anything that could be used as a weapon. The sheer numbers of these makeshift troops, and the determination in their eyes, made up for their lack of training. noveldrama
“Dad, do you see now?” Quintus spoke up proudly. “No matter how strong or intelligent a minority may be, when they go against the will of the people, they are destined to fail! There is still time for you to turn back!”
Adolph, already shaken, felt his heart tremble even more.
“If you won’t change, then you are my enemy!” Quintus shouted once more.
To his surprise, Adolph merely smiled–a bitter, conflicted smile filled with both sorrow and pride.
“Quintus, it’s too late for me to turn back now. Come, let me see if you are truly worthy of carrying the Lenoir name!”
“Dad!” Quintus called out, desperation in his voice. “There’s no such thing as ‘too late‘! You-”
Hiss!
Before he could finish, Adolph spurred his horse forward, blade raised high.
Quintus‘ eyes widened. Instinct took over–he struck the side of the sword with his fist, diverting the blow by mere inches, but Adolph’s blade swung back swiftly–relentless, powerful.
There was no hesitation.
His heart pounded. He had always known his father was a master of combat, but he had never seen him unleash his full strength.
Now, facing him in battle, he realized Adolph was even stronger than he had imagined–perhaps as formidable as any foe he had encountered on Dark Night Island.
With no room to evade, Quintus grabbed the flat side of the blade.
Even Adolph was taken aback. What is he thinking?
What do you think?
