Chapter 687
The man's voice broke through the quiet like a sudden gust of wind.
"I pushed her away. It's what I wanted, but still..."
He pressed hard against his chest.
"Turns out, it still hurts."
Alex was still processing the hint of self-mockery in his voice when she caught sight of his sudden pallor. His eyes filled with pain, and he coughed up a startling gush of blood. The red seeped menacingly into his white shirt-it was a sight that struck like a punch.
"Mr. Everett!" Alex's voice shot up in panic.
At the hospital, Callum, clad in his doctor's white coat, rushed into the room. Everett lay there, looking as frail as the sheets that covered him, his face ghostly pale.
Callum skimmed the medical chart at the bedside, his shock evident. He forgot any past grudges and blurted out, "When did this happen? How could there be signs of rejection?"
Everett had bounced back remarkably well after his heart transplant, almost like any regular guy, thanks to his youth and active lifestyle. He cast a glance at Callum but stayed mum.
Alex stepped in to explain, "It might be from that car crash over three years ago. Back then, Mr. Everett was hit hard by grief-losing Josh and his wife leaving. He never really took the time to heal. It was in France when he felt off and got it checked."
Callum's hand shook a bit.
If that's the case, he was more involved than he cared to admit.
"Does Selena know?"
"No," Everett's gaze sharpened. "We're divorced. We're nothing to each other. She doesn't need to know."
His words were laced with warning.
Callum wasn't slow on the uptake; he pieced everything together quickly.
Everett had been protecting Yasmine, agreed to the divorce, cut ties with Selena, and even went on blind dates-all to make Selena let go of him.
So he could pass on without strings attached.
Callum felt a knot in his stomach, angry on Selena's behalf. "You're such a jerk."
Everett nodded, his voice laden with regret, "Indeed, a jerk. That's why I don't deserve her."
"And you think it's okay to break her heart like this?"noveldrama
Fueled by anger, Callum grabbed Everett by the collar, ready to swing.
But seeing Everett's frail state, his own temples throbbing with restrained fury, he stopped short.
"Everett, don't think you can scare me with this. Once you're better, we'll settle this."
He shoved him back onto the bed.
Everett winced, pain etched on his
face, but he still managed a mocking smile, Callum, you know why you always lose to me? It's because of this!"
"You lose because you're not decisive enough!"
Callum sneered back, "Let's see who outlasts the other!"
Everett's smirk faded.
He didn't have much time left to outlast anyone.
In this round, Callum had indeed won.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, Selena and the kids had been in Northtown for a while now.
Even though Northtown was quite a departure from Newport in many ways, they were settling in just fine.
Tomorrow was Valentine's Eve, and Selena went out shopping with the help.
They loaded several hefty bags into the car, and Selena headed off to the restroom.
But out of the blue, as she was

was clear-it was a woman.
