Chapter 183 Making a Living

I was confused. Wasn't my identity supposed to be confidential?

I hesitated before testing the waters and sent a message back. "Why did Harvey say I'm a nepotism hire?"

Heather took a long time before finally replying. "I'm not sure. He just told everyone you were a nepotism hire, but we think he's just trying to smear you. Rumor has it he wanted to get his wife into the company, but HR hired you instead. He's probably mad about that."

I went silent. I was tempted to tell her that it wasn't just about that. Harvey had plenty of reasons to hold a grudge against me.

Noticing my lack of response, Heather quickly sent another message.

"Don't stress too much. As long as you keep your head and suck up to him a little, you can survive. That's just how things work around here."

I stared at my phone, feeling a wave of irony wash over me. He was just a team leader, yet he acted like a tyrant.

I glanced at Heather and couldn't help but ask the question in my mind. "Have none of you ever fought back?"

She was indifferent, looking as if she had long accepted reality.

"It's useless. He has too many tricks up his sleeve, and no one can beat him. The company pays well enough, so we just put up with it. Just consider it the price to pay to make a living.

"One guy actually tried to fight back, and he even publicly cursed him out. Guess what? It didn't matter. Harvey walked away unscathed, and that guy? He got bullied out of the company. Last I heard, he even ended up with depression."noveldrama

I thought about her words for the rest of the day.

I had assumed Harvey was just a typical office bully, but apparently, he was worse than I imagined. From what I could see, I should be his number-one target at this point. Well then, I would just have to wait and see.

As I stepped out of the company, I saw Eric waving at me from a distance and quickly walked over.

"What are you doing here?" I asked while scanning my surroundings.

Eric chuckled at my paranoid behavior and reassured me, "I sent the driver away. You don't have to worry."

Hearing that, I finally relaxed.

Eric usually traveled in flashy luxury cars. If anyone saw it, my undercover plan would be ruined before it even started.

Just as I was about to say something, a car suddenly pulled up beside us. The window rolled down, revealing Levi's grinning face.

The moment Eric saw him, his expression instantly darkened like a stormy sky.

"What are you doing here?" he asked coldly.

"That's none of your business." Levi rolled his eyes at him and then turned to look at me with a smile.

"Jane, your first day at work must've been exhausting. I came to pick you up."

Before I could respond, Eric wrapped his arm around my shoulder and mockingly countered, "No need for your

ncern. She's my wife, and I'll

take her home myself."

Levi's eyes twitched, but he held back his urge to curse. Instead, he looked at me

expectantly. "Jane, come on. Get in the car."

I pointed toward the black sedan parked nearby and shook my head. "I drove

myself today."

Levi's shoulders slumped in defeat. I

gave him an apologetic smile, then turned to get into my own car. Eric followed along with a victorious smirk on his face. I didn't need to guess to know that he had just won an argument against Levi,

"Let's go," Eric said cheerfully, clearly in high spirits.

Just as I started the engine, the door to the back seat suddenly swung open, and

Levi slipped inside.

Eric rarely looked truly shocked, but

this time, his expression was priceless. He turned around and stared at Levi in disbelief. "Why the hell are you following us?"

I glanced in the rear-view mirror and saw Levi's smug grin. "What? Jane hasn't said anything. It's not your call to make." Then, he looked at me and asked, "Isn't that right, Jane?"
