Chapter 117
Kayla and Marissa, as the grand finale guests of the auction, were personally escorted by Janet with high- profile attention as they entered the venue. Since Paisley had chosen to sit with the girls from a poor village, Kayla and Marissa didn't notice her, but Paisley saw them right away.
Immediately, she frowned, her thoughts drifting into silent criticism. One of the teachers sitting beside her noticed Paisley's discomfort and, growing uneasy, quickly asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
Realizing that her expression had made the children and teachers uncomfortable, Paisley quickly forced a smile. "No, I'm fine," she reassured them.
Seeing Paisley's smile again, the teachers relaxed slightly. Meanwhile, one of the girls, not much older than Serena, nervously extended her hand toward Paisley. She wanted to hug this beautiful lady, but she was unsure of how to approach her.
"Annie, no," the teacher quickly intervened, fearing that the child might overstep and make a bad impression on Paisley. Over the years, they had encountered many challenges while promoting the care for left-behind girls, and had learned the harsh realities of life.
This experience had taught them one important lesson, which was to never take someone else's politeness for granted. The girl's eyes dimmed upon hearing the reprimand, and she slowly lowered her hand.
"It's okay," Paisley said gently, not wanting to disappoint such a pure and innocent child. She took the little girl in her arms. "Come here and let me hug you.'
One of the teachers said, "Her clothes are dirty."
Paisley didn't mind at all and reassured, "It's fine. I really like this little girl. I have a daughter, around the same age as her."
Seeing that Paisley genuinely wanted to be close to the girl, the two teachers finally relaxed and smiled in relief. It wasn't that they were overly cautious.
But over the years, they had encountered many people who, under the guise of helping the children, were only using them for attention and publicity.
One moment, they'd be smiling, hugging the children, and taking photos and videos, and the next, they would be pushing the children aside with visible disdain.
"Is her name just Annie?" Paisley asked.
The teacher shook her head. "Her name is actually Asshat Dung, but we just call her Annie."
Paisley thought she had heard wrong, but when she looked at the teachers, they nodded, confirming her suspicion. Their eyes then moved to the other children, their expressions filled with helplessness. "The names of these children are all similar-there's Asshat, Dumbwit, and then there's her..." The teacher's gaze finally lingered on the oldest girl. "Her name is Slut."
Paisley and Lucy exchanged a glance, deeply shaken. They couldn't imagine how a girl could live with the name "Slut".
"That's a name?" Lucy exclaimed angrily, her eyes blazing with fury.
Paisley looked at the girl named "Slut". She looked numb as if she had grown accustomed to it. This was the first time Paisley desperately wished her paintings would sell for a high price, so she could contribute to improving the future of these girls from the remote areas.noveldrama
All the guests arrived, and the lights in the venue dimmed. Both the auctioneer and the host had taken their places, signaling that the auction was about to begin.
Paisley was about to return to her original seat, only to find that it had been taken by someone else without her noticing. The person was deep in conversation with a few others, making it awkward for Paisley to go back.
So, Paisley and Lucy decided to stay where they were. Kayla and Marissa had taken the central seats at the front table. Feeling the attention from all directions, Marissa was delighted.
She held her head high, like a proud swan, sitting there with an air of superiority, her gaze fixed ahead. This seat had initially been assigned to two other guests, but Marissa had contacted Crown&Culture, demanding two invitations and the most prominent spot in the venue.
Janet had been in a difficult position because of this, but fortunately, the original guests were understanding and graciously chose to step aside, sparing Janet from further discomfort.
