The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 390

Wesley spat out a mouthful of blood. At that moment, he was enduring a pain far beyond what any ordinary person could tolerate. His face was contorted with agony, yet he managed to force out the words, "Mr. Jenkins, there really is no evidence..."

"I just couldn't handle it. I wanted to be with Dahlia so badly that I teamed up with Evelyn, trying to make you misunderstand Dahlia, to turn you against her, so I could be with her..."

Even though Wesley was in such excruciating pain that he could barely speak, he stuck to his story. Charles's eyes were dark and intense, and the pressure from his foot never eased up. Wesley convulsed with the pain, aware that Charles was using this method to pry the truth out of him. But the truth was something he could never reveal. Eventually, Charles lifted his foot.

Wesley was just an average guy; this kind of pain was unbearable for anyone not trained to endure it. If he lied, he wouldn't last. So, it was really Evelyn.

Charles called someone to take Wesley for medical attention. Soon, the hospital room was left with just Dahlia and Charles.

"Charles, you saw it yourself. It was Evelyn who plotted to harm me. I was almost driven to my death by her..." Dahlia sobbed, hoping Charles would step in to protect her and deal with Evelyn.

"What do you want me to do to her?" Charles asked coldly, not moving to comfort Dahlia.

Dahlia realized Charles seemed inclined to protect Evelyn, and she lost her composure, her eyes red as she challenged him, "Are you saying I should pretend none of this ever happened?"noveldrama

Evelyn almost pushed her to the brink, yet Charles seemed indifferent, ready to let Evelyn off the hook.

"Charles, do I have to actually die at Evelyn's hands before you'll take action against her?"

Charles wasn't swayed by Dahlia's words; his tone remained cold, with a touch of deep, irreparable sorrow as he replied, "Dahlia, you're okay, you're here safe, but Charlie is really gone."

"Even if it wasn't intentional, we can't escape responsibility for Charlie's death.”

"If you and Evelyn switched places, would you easily forgive Evelyn?"

This question teft Dahlia speechless. If it had been Sandy who died, she certainly wouldn't have been like e Evelyn, depressed and unable to moveon. Having someone like Brooks pursue her was a stroke of luck she could only dream of; if it were her, she would've been with Brooks long ago, living the life of a society lady. Why would she remember Sandy then? swnovel

But she couldn't say that. She couldn't let Charles see that she never truly loved Sandy. She could only rein in her emotions and go alongwith Charles, "But we already paid a painful price two years ago, isn't that enough?" swnovel

"Charles, I don't want you to just let Evelyn off easy, just give her a lesson; it's not

that I really want something bad to happen to her, it's for her own good."

"She's backed herself into a corner, making it so there's no end between us. She's starting to resort to any means necessary. This time, Wesley's timely realization prevented a disaster." swnovel

"Have you thought about what would happen if you believed Wesley's words, thinking I deliberately caused Charlie's death?"

"What would you do to me? With you protecting me, Evelyn can act so recklessly. What if you misunderstood me, hated me, and stopped shielding me?"

"Brooks is deeply in love with her; he's her sharpest weapon. Without your support, powerless and defenseless, what would become of me?"

"If something happened to me, could Evelyn escape unscathed? She would eventually harm herself and others!"

Dahlia spoke with such sincerity, as if she were truly considering Evelyn's welfare. If this had been before, Charles would have made sure Evelyn learned a lesson she'd never forget.
