The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 411

Charles had just dozed off when he felt Adam shaking him awake, not too gently either. Being a light sleeper, it didn't take much to get him up. As his eyes fluttered open, he shot a glare at Adam, full of unspoken annoyance.

Adam, unfazed by the look, met his eyes and said coolly, "My godmother wants to see you." Just like that, Charles' irritation melted away. His godmother was Evelyn's mom—a meeting he didn't expect.

Without wasting a second, Charles tossed off the covers and got to his feet. He moved too fast, and dizziness hit him like a wave. Steadying himself with one hand on the bed, he paused, then headed to the bathroom. After a quick wash and grabbing his jacket, he was out the door, crossing the hall to the other hospital room.

He pushed the door open gently. "Ma'am," he greeted Josephine, his tone respectful, devoid of any arrogance.

Josephine, mindful of her recent surgery, had been working on keeping her cool. As she waited for him, she focused on staying calm. Seeing Charles now, she was more composed.

"Come over here," she said. Charles moved closer. Ever since they first met, Josephine had always been cold towards him. This was the first time her tone was so even. He had no idea what she was going to say. He walked right up to her bedside.

Evelyn stood nearby, visibly tense. She worried that her mom, fresh from surgery, might get upset because of Charles. Yet, she was also anxious to hear what her mom had uncovered. She hadn't wanted her mom to meet with Charles just yet.

After Adam went to fetch him, she had gently suggested, "Mom, your health is what matters most. Can't this wait until you're feeling better?" She thought Josephine wanted to confront him, not out of defense for Charles but out of concern for her mom's health. swnovelnoveldrama

"Eve, this is about Charlie's justice. I can't wait," Josephine replied. She knew she wasn't in the best shape but Eve had endured enough because of mistaken identity, letting Dahlia swoop in and steal her place. The thought of Dahlia using Eve's identity to hurt Eve, and even causing Charlie's death, all while getting away with it, drove

Josephine to want to reveal Dahlia's

lies. She was eager to see how Dahlia would react when the truth came out. swnovel

At the mention of Charlie, Evelyn's expression shifted, and she asked carefully, "Mom, did you find something out?"

"Yes," Josephine nodded softly. Evelyn was about to ask more when Charles walked in. Josephine looked at Charles and cut straight to the chase:

"Charles, listen up. You've got the wrong person; Dahlia isn't who you think she is..."

"Charles..."

Josephine's words were cut off as Dahlia barged in, pushing a wheelchair, the door banging loudly as she flung it open. Everyone turned to look at the commotion.

"Who let you in?!" Charles reacted first, his voice tense as he glanced between Josephine in bed and Evelyn beside her. Then he turned to Dahlia, his tone icy and accusatory. Josephine's attitude towards him made it clear she'd be even more hostile towards Dahlia. Her showing up now would only upset Josephine, who couldn't handle any stress. He had warned Dahlia just last night to stay away from Eve and her mom. swnovel
