Chapter 431
Wesley was taken away, and everything felt final, like the last page of a book.
"Brooks, let's head back to the hospital," Evelyn sighed, her spirit and body utterly drained. She couldn't bear another glance at Charles or Dahlia.
"Alright," Brooks replied softly, wrapping an arm around Evelyn as they made their way out, moving together with a closeness that spoke volumes.
Charles's gaze darkened, the sight of them together like a thorn in his side. Instinctively, he took a step forward, yearning to pull Evelyn into his embrace. But as soon as he moved, Dahlia's grip on his wrist brought him back to reality. "Charles, can you help me with the paperwork?" Dahlia asked, holding onto his hand, her voice laced with a sweetness that belied the jealousy simmering beneath. She pretended not to notice how his attention had wandered to Evelyn.
"Okay," Charles murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. Reluctantly, he tore his gaze away from Evelyn and joined the officers to assist Dahlia with the necessary signatures.
Once Charles disappeared from sight, Dahlia's eyes found Evelyn, who was already stepping out of the police station, her envy and hatred barely concealed. Her hands clenched on the wheelchair's armrests, seething with an anger she couldn't suppress. She couldn't just let Evelyn walk away after everything that had happened.
Knowing the paperwork would take a while, Dahlia maneuvered her wheelchair towards Evelyn.noveldrama
Outside, Brooks headed to the parking lot to fetch the car. It was parked a bit away, and given Evelyn's emotional state, he suggested she wait while he brought
it around. Evelyn was truly exhausted and nodded, staying put.
As Brooks walked away, Dahlia followed them outside, careful not to approach Evelyn directly. She cast a furtive glance at the surveillance cameras, subtly adjusting her wheelchair to evade their view, yet still keeping the station's entrance in her sights.
Facing forward, Dahlia maintained a facade of indifference, as if she and Evelyn had no beef, but her words were sharp and provoking.
"Evelyn, I'm not afraid to confess—you guessed right. I was the mastermind," Dahlia declared, her voice low but dripping with malice.
"I had Wesley spread those lies about you being a homewrecker to stress out
your fragile mother," she continued, her words like poison.
"I was the one who pushed your mom down the stairs and paid off the nurse to unplug her oxygen. I wanted her dead. She deserved it! Just like that little brat you brought into this world. Both of you deserve nothing but misery!"
Evelyn's child was a stain in Dahlia's eyes, a constant reminder of what could have been. If she had anyone to blame, it was Evelyn for daring to give birth to someone who might challenge her place.
Indeed, a child born to someone without self-awareness, still trying to capture Charles's attention by playing innocent and sweet, hoping to help Evelyn drive a wedge between her and Charles.
That child should never have existed. And the old woman brought her fate upon herself, insisting on exposing her as not being Debbie, trying to restore Evelyn's rightful identity.
She couldn't allow such a threat to her existence. No one could steal her identity as Debbie-not even Evelyn. From the moment Charles recognized her with the jade pendant, she became Debbie.
"Dahlia!" Evelyn's voice was a low growl, eyes blazing with a fury she could barely contain, her chest heaving with anger. She wanted nothing more than to lash out at this venomous woman.
But just as she was about to rush forward, the surveillance cameras caught her eye. Evelyn forced herself to stop, to breathe, knowing Dahlia was baiting her, hoping she'd lose control.
In
Dahlia was banking on it, feeling untouchable. Under the watchful eyes of the cameras at the station entrance, if Evelyn snapped and attacked her, Dahlia could pretend to be seriously injured, claim emotional trauma. She'd insist on pressing charges, determined to drag Evelyn down with her.
