The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 447

When Evelyn rushed to the hospital, Adam had already been moved to a ward.

On her way there, she bumped into one of Adam's teammates. He was clutching a pack of cigarettes, looking pretty grim, clearly making his way to the stairwell for a smoke.noveldrama

Spotting Evelyn, he stopped in his tracks. "Is Adam okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face.

Evelyn, still catching her breath from the frantic sprint, looked at him with a mix of hope and fear. How could a car accident happen at such a crucial time? She couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to Adam. If something went wrong, all his years of hard work would go down the drain. How crushed would Adam be?

"He's not in any life-threatening danger, but his wrist... it's pretty bad. The doc said it's basically useless now," Adam's teammate admitted, his voice heavy with

sorrow.

Being Adam's close buddy, he knew better than anyone how much blood, sweat, and tears Adam had poured into chasing that championship dream. Now, with his wrist messed up, it meant he could never compete again.

The news hit Evelyn like a ton of bricks. She staggered back, eyes welling up, tears spilling over uncontrollably. It was like a wave of sadness had washed over her. It took her a moment to pull herself together. Once she wiped away the tears, she steadied her emotions and headed towards Adam's room.

The ward door was closed, but through the small window, she saw Adam with his back turned. Just as she was about to enter, she noticed his shoulders shaking- he was crying. It felt like a dagger to her heart, and tears started streaming down her face again.

There they were, one inside, one outside, both silently shedding tears.

That was until a nurse came by to change Adam's IV. The noise alerted Adam, and he quickly tried to wipez away his tears with his injured hand. As the anesthesia wore off, the pain shot through him, reminding him starkly that his hand was indeed useless now. Years of hard training-all gone. No more competitions. No championship medal. His biggest dream was now his greatest regret.

Adam was struggling to accept this new reality. Almost in disbelief, he refused to believe his hand was truly done for. He fidgeted with it, hoping to convince himself it was just a minor setback, that with a bit of rest, he'd be back in the game.

"Adam, watch your hand," Evelyn said, her voice tinged with panic. She hurried inside, gently yet firmly pressing his shoulder to stop him from moving.

Hearing her, Adam froze. He buried his face in the pillow, wiping the tears away. Then, taking a deep breath to compose himself, he turned to face Evelyn.

"It's nothing, I just forgot for a second about my hand," he said, trying to sound nonchalant.

The nurse, who had just walked in, gave a nod of approval while adjusting his IV drip. "Great attitude," she said with a small smile.

Adam threw the nurse a charming grin, and once she was done, she left the room. Now it was just Evelyn and Adam.

"Why the long face? It's like

something awful happened!" Adam

quipped, trying to lighten the mood "It's just one hand not being as nimble It's not the end of the world. It won't mess up my life. Don't make it seem like the sky's falling!"

He didn't want Evelyn to worry about him. She had been through enough already.

He didn't want his injury to be another burden on her heart, making her worry and feel sad for him.
