“I’m okay, Eric. It’s Denver who needs attention,” Hadley responded, slightly turning away, her discomfort evident.

Was her discomfort because of Denver’s presence?

Without any show of emotion, Eric retracted his hand and faced Denver. “I’m grateful you were there tonight. Thanks for protecting Hadley. I can’t imagine what I would do if something had happened to her.”

She resisted, trying to pull away. “Go home if you must, Eric, but I’m staying.”

“You’re not coming?” Eric’s grip tightened, making sure she couldn’t slip away. “You mean to stay overnight at the hospital? To keep watch over an old flame?”

The color drained from Hadley’s face as she said, “Denver is injured because of me. He hasn’t even been operated on yet. It’s not right for me to leave.”

“Phillips is handling it,” Eric retorted, his gaze intense. “I’ve arranged for the best medical team, the finest room, and the utmost care. What more do you need to stay for?”
