Chapter 294 Reputation Cannot Be Ignored
The review had been posted just minutes earlier. Reading through it, Jason
immediately guessed the author-he could practically see Lacey's indignant expression through her passionate critique. Her critique was sharp yet fair. Amused, he responded with a brief 'Well-reasoned,' followed by a string of thumbs-up emojis.
Early the next morning, Lacey checked her phone before getting out of bed. Scrolling through responses to her review, she froze upon seeing one particular comment. Jason's profile picture made him instantly recognizable. She bolted upright, pounding her fists against her comforter in mortification.
He must have realized she wrote the review, exposing her embarrassment for all to see. After tossing and turning, Lacey finally dragged herself out of bed to get ready, silently vowing to avoid initiating contact with him until the memory of both the awkward movie and her flustered review had faded.
While eating breakfast, her phone rang-it was Richard with shocking news. After hanging up, she immediately opened the local forum to find a scandalous story about a teacher-student relationship trending. The post contained vicious lies about Jason. Unsure if he had seen it yet, she called him immediately.
Jason mentioned he was making breakfast and planned to head to campus afterward. From his tone, she could tell he was unaware of the rumors.
Instinctively wanting to protect him, Lacey suggested, "After yesterday's incident with that student, there are bound to be unpleasant rumors circulating. Perhaps you should take a few days off until things settle down?"
Jason laughed it off. "I've done nothing wrong, so I have nothing to fear from gossip. Besides, I can't let my students miss their lessons just because I'm avoiding public opinion."
His determination was unwavering. After hanging up, Lacey felt uncharacteristically anxious. Though typically level-headed in any situation, she couldn't remain calm when Jason's reputation-perhaps even his career was at stake. Refreshing the page, she saw the post's view count had exploded in just twenty minutes.
She forced herself to calm down. As Jason had said, he'd done nothing wrong.
Just then, the development department called with an update. After hearing their report, an idea struck her. She immediately drove to Jason's house.
As she was about to ring the doorbell, Jason opened the door, briefcase in hand and clearly ready for work.
"Broadway Alley is being demolished today," she said. "Would you like to see it one last time?"
Knowing the old neighborhood held special meaning for him, she gambled that he would want to witness its final moments. Checking his watch, Jason hesitated before nodding in agreement.
Relieved, Lacey accompanied him to Broadway Alley. Over the years, all residents had vacated the area-even Emily had removed everything she could from her old house.
Now, excavators and construction crews stood ready. Jason paused at the entrance, gazing down the alley he had traversed countless times, memories washing over him.
In his mind's eye, he saw himself as a young man, riding his bicycle with Emily perched on the back, her hands clutching her dress, feet swinging freely. Emily's smile had always made her eyes crinkle, her long lashes fluttering like butterflies. Her laughter was so contagious that it effortlessly brought a smile to his face.
If anyone asked why he was smiling, he couldn't explain it. He just knew that Emily's laughter had always lifted his spirits.
Shortly after they arrived, another car pulled up. Emily and Ethan emerged, walking to stand beside Jason at the alley entrance. Together, they stared silently at the potholed lane.
Even though Broadway Alley was run-down, it was packed with memories. Now it would be gone, existing only in their memories.
At the foreman's signal, the demolition began. A thunderous explosion brought the old buildings crashing down, dust billowing skyward. Excavators moved forward, methodically reducing their former homes to rubble.
The past was slipping into oblivion. With Broadway Alley's destruction, the final bond tying Jason and Emily together was severed.
Suppressing his bitterness, Jason forced a smile. "It's for the best. These buildings were becoming dangerous practically condemned. They were an eyesore. Demolishing them makes sense."
Emily understood his sadness, but they had both grown past the need for emotional displays. Adulthood had taught them to shield themselves, to hide their feelings behind calm facades.noveldrama
"You're right," Emily agreed. "Society moves forward, conditions get better. Kids today are lucky."
Checking his watch, Jason announced he needed to leave for class.
"Can't you take just one day off?" Lacey pleaded.
Ethan added, "Stay. We're rarely all together-let us treat you to lunch."
Jason's gaze moved from one face to another, sensing something unspoken.
"We can have lunch another time. I can't miss class," he insisted.
As he opened his car door, Lacey stopped him. After a moment's hesitation, she decided he should know the truth-better to be prepared.
She showed him the defamatory post. Jason remained calm, even smiling slightly. "I can't let external factors interfere with my students' education."
"You should go to the police first," Lacey insisted.
Jason had already started the engine. "The truth will speak for itself," he said before driving away.
He had anticipated complications after yesterday's incident but hadn't imagined the rumors would so completely distort reality. Whatever happened, he would face it head-on.
Near the school entrance, an egg suddenly splattered against his windshield. Then another, and another. By the time he parked and exited his vehicle, egg yolk dripped down the sides of his car. Nearby, people pointed and whispered.
Jason calmly locked his car and walked steadily toward the faculty building. Colleagues who normally greeted him warmly now passed silently, avoiding interaction.
With a slight smile, Jason continued to his office. He had barely sat down when Mike entered.
Clearing his throat, Mike placed a hand on Jason's shoulder. "I assume you've heard the rumors. I believe in your character, of course, but gossip is powerful. Did you offend someone? The dean wants to see you this situation looks troublesome."

Jason and Mike had always maintained a good relationship at the university. Mike was among the few who hadn't mocked him and seemed genuinely concerned.
Jason smiled reassuringly. "It's fine. I've done nothing wrong."
Mike remained pessimistic. "I'm not worried about the truth being twisted-I'm worried about whoever's pulling strings behind the scenes."
Jason simply smiled and headed to the dean's office, reminded of when Emily had faced similar defamation. If she had endured it, what did he have to fear? The truth would eventually emerge.
In the dean's office, he was politely offered a seat. Jason remained standing respectful in manner but refusing to appear submissive.
The dean sipped his coffee before speaking gravely. "Jason, you graduated from our institution, and we brought you back because of your knowledge and abilities. We hoped you would help train excellent doctors who would contribute to society."
"Please speak plainly," Jason said politely but firmly.
The dean chuckled awkwardly. "Very well. I'm sure you've seen the online rumors. You've always been popular with students, which I considered positive until Yara's incident last night and the subsequent distortions. Now there's widespread criticism of you and, by extension, our institution. Our university has existed for over a century without such negative publicity."
Jason nodded in understanding. "I see your point. If you believe I'm damaging the school's reputation, I can resign and sever my connection with the university."
The dean seemed surprised by Jason's directness and appeared somewhat embarrassed, knowing the rumors were unfounded.
"Jason, this isn't what I wanted to happen..." the dean hesitated.
"You can quit a job, but you can't throw away your reputation," a decisive female voice
interrupted from the doorway.
Both men turned to see Lacey entering with two police officers.
What do you think?
