Chapter 1628
Jamie froze.
Though she didn't meet his gaze, she could feel Ben's emotions lingering in the air. Her resolve wavered, but that unspoken thorn in her heart held her back. She stayed silent, even as Ben got up and left. After that, things between them shifted, the atmosphere growing subtly tense.
Even their assistant couldn't help but notice.novelbin
"Miss Lewis, is something going on with you and Mr. Lucas? You both seem...off," he ventured cautiously.
Jamie glanced at Ben, who was engrossed in a stack of documents, and quickly looked away. "Nothing at all. We're just focusing on work," she replied lightly.
The assistant didn't buy it, but lacking proof, he had no choice but to drop the matter.
"Do you play golf?" Ben's voice broke the silence suddenly.
Jamie blinked, startled by the question. "A little, but I often miss or send the ball flying," she admitted honestly.
Ben's lips twitched slightly, suppressing a smile. Sending the ball flying? That wasn't "a little."
"No matter. Tomorrow, we'll spend the day at the golf course. I'll teach you." His tone was calm, as though this was just another item on the agenda.
Jamie nodded, a faint sense of anticipation bubbling up within her. She didn't even realize how much she was looking forward to it.

At the golf course, Jamie had tried several swings, but none of her shots were hitting the mark.
Ben stood nearby, watching with a slight frown. He hadn't planned to intervene, but as Jamie's balls flew further off course with each attempt, he couldn't hold back any longer. With a gentle tap on her knee, he said, "You're holding the club wrong. Your stance is off too. You need to put power into your lower body, or the ball will keep veering off course." Jamie's eyes lit up in realization.
Ben stepped closer, placing his hands over hers to guide her movements. Together, they made several successful shots. "Here, I have something for you," he said afterward.
"Ben?" Jamie looked at him
curiously. In his hand was a pair of
black lace gloves. "Consider it a reward for your progress and you'l
need them for tomorrow night's event. There's a gala happening here."
Snapping out of her momentary daze, Jamie accepted the gloves, moving from confusion to understanding.
Yet, she couldn't help but feel a tinge of inexplicable disappointment.
"So it's just for the gala," she murmured to herself, brushing off her earlier thoughts. "That's fine."
She consoled herself, adept at finding comfort in any situation. After all, this was a business trip. Perhaps she was reading too much into things. With that thought, she felt much better.
That evening, the hotel staff
delivered a dress to Jamie's room. It
was a classic black strapless gown paired with a simple yet elegant necklace, reminiscent of classic timeless style.
Yet the sight of the dress stirred an uneasy memory. The last time Jamie had seen a similar black

dress was when she thought she had glimpsed Winnie, alive and well, shortly after her funeral. For a fleeting moment, she had believed in the impossible, that Winnie had
returned from the dead.
Since those messages Winnie had given her, she had vanished without a trace. Jamie's chest tightened. Where was Winnie now? Was she safe?

She pressed a hand against her chest, willing herself to push the thoughts aside. There was no point dwelling on it now. She turned her focus back to preparing for the gala.
Jamie and Ben arrived together at the gala, their entrance immediately drawing attention and lending significant prestige to the event.
"Mr. Lucas, thank you for gracing us with your presence," the host greeted them warmly. "I thought this was just a small gathering. I never expected you to attend."
