The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 428

She was feeling pretty rough on the first day of her period. She snuggled down on the bed next to Brooks, who tucked the blanket around her with care. Adam watched Evelyn for a moment. Despite all his coaxing, she refused to take a proper rest, insisting on staying by her godmother's side. But a single word from Brooks, and she complied without hesitation. Adam decided to head over to the lounge for some rest, leaving the couch free for Brooks.

Brooks dragged the couch closer, positioning it between Evelyn and Josephine, and laid down. Holding Evelyn's hand gently, he whispered, "Get some sleep." As Adam left, he switched off the bedside lamp, and the room was enveloped in a soothing dimness. The only sounds were the gentle hum of the hospital machines and their soft breathing. Feeling reassured, Evelyn quickly fell asleep. Once he was sure she was resting, Brooks let himself drift off too, finally succumbing to the exhaustion of being awake for so long.

The next morning, Evelyn was up early, her mind already racing with thoughts about the investigation into Dahlia's alleged involvement in the incident. As she opened her eyes, she realized Brooks was still holding her hand. She turned to meet his gentle gaze, their eyes locking for a moment that made her cheeks warm. She quietly pulled her hand back and got up to freshen up. Brooks had arranged for breakfast, and especially for Evelyn, he had someone bring ginger tea with cinnamon and honey, hoping to ease her cramps.

They enjoyed breakfast together, after which Brooks accompanied Evelyn to the police station, while Adam stayed back at the hospital with a temporary nurse to look after Josephine.

At the Police Station

Evelyn and Brooks walked in side by side, finding Charles already there. The officer handling the case was speaking to him with respect, "Mr. Jenkins, our investigation has confirmed that Ms. Dahlia iso innocent..." The words hit Evelyn like a cold wave, making her blood run cold. Anger surged through her as she marched forward. In front of everyone, she slapped Charles hard, her voice shaking with fury, "Charles, how long are you going to blindly protect Dahlia?"

Charles' face darkened with the sting of the slap, "Evelyn!" Had he been too Jenient with her lately? Seeing Charles' anger, Brooks quicklystepped up, placing himself between Evelyn and Charlesto prevent any further confrontation. Charles' expression turned even more sour as he saw Brooks' protective stance.

Sensing the tension, the officer quickly interjected, "Ms. Evelyn, you're mistaken, Mr. Jenkins isn't covering for Ms. Dahlia. We've thoroughly investigated, and it turns out someone else orchestrated the attack on your mother, not Ms. Dahlia."

"Someone else? Who?" Evelyn's chest tightened with rage. Even if the nurse didn't point fingers, she was convinced Dahlia had a hand in it. How could they expect her to believe otherwise?

"Ms. Evelyn, please come with me." As a family member of the victim, the police owed her some answers. Seeing her disbelief, they led Evelyn to the interrogation room. Charles walked ahead, with the officer a step behind. Brooks stayed with Evelyn, accompanying her to the door of the interrogation room.

When they opened the door, Evelyn saw Wesley inside, his hands cuffed. "Ms. Evelyn, we have solid evidencenoveldrama

It was Wesley who spread those

viciou@rumors about you being the third wheel in Mr. Jenkins and Ms. Dahlia's relationship. He's also the one who contacted the nurse, offering her half a million to remove your mother's oxygen tube."
