The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 429

"But my mom's nurse aide was sure it was Dahlia herself yesterday..." Evelyn clenched her fists, struggling to keep a lid on the anger boiling inside as she argued with the officer. "We've gone over this thoroughly," the officer replied calmly. "Your mom's aide was just guessing. She never actually met Miss Dahlia."

"It was only on the day of your mom's accident, at the surgery room's entrance, that she overheard you accusing Miss Dahlia. That's why she jumped to the conclusion that the person contacting her was Ms. Dahlia."

"So, after the incident, she pointed the finger at Miss Dahlia in front of you. But it was Wesley who'd been in touch with her all along."

The officer explained the situation to Evelyn patiently. Hearing this, Evelyn knew the police had done their homework. But letting Dahlia off the hook again? That was a tough pill to swallow.

"Officer, there's more to this than meets the eye."noveldrama

"Don't rush to close the case. You need to dig deeper with Wesley and find more evidence."

"Wesley can't be the mastermind. He had no beef with my mom. It must be Dahlia..."

"Evelyn, you can't lay everything at Dahlia's feet."

Wesley, who had been quiet up until now, suddenly cut in, clearly agitated. He had to protect Dahlia. If something happened to her and Charles found out what she was really like, he'd wash his hands of Sandy.

With no money and no power, Sandy's future looked grim. Sandy was his only daughter, and even if Dahlia had led her astray, she was just seven. There was still time to make things right.

The pressing issue was getting Sandy well. Once she was healthy, everything else could fall into place. Inciting someone to commit murder might only mean a few years behind bars. Behave well, and he might get out early. Trading a few years of his life for Sandy's health? Totally worth it.

Wesley tightened his grip and delivered his prepared speech.

know you have it out for Dahlinet

and

will do whatever it takes to hurt her. But Dahlia's innocent."

"If you're going to blame someone, blame yourself. If you hadn't gone after Dahlia

and dragged me into hurting her, I wouldn't have gone after you."

"You put Dahlia through hell, made her lose the person she cared about most. I want you to feel that same pain."

"Evelyn, nobody's going to hurt Dahlia. Last time, I let myself get fooled... I've already let her down. I won't let anyone harm her, not on my watch!"

"Anyone who messes with her will pay the price!"

"Your mom ended up in a coma because of your own sins..."

Charles's eyes turned cold as he landed a swift kick on Wesley, who was deliberately trying to provoke and hurt Evelyn. Wesley fell from his chair, the handcuffs crashing into his mouth, leaving it bloody and too painful to open for a while.

Evelyn didn't let Wesley's words shake her; losing her cool would only cloud her

judgment. She turned to the officers and spoke again.

"And what about the fifty grand? Where did Wesley get that kind of money? Officers, you need to track down where it came from. It's got to be Dahlia's doing. She's pulling the strings, and Wesley's taking the fall for her!"

"Evelyn!" Charles couldn't hold back any longer. With all the evidence out there,

yet she wouldn't let go of Dahlia. He spoke in a firm tone.

"Yes, the fifty grand was from Dahlia, but it was for Wesley to get out of town. She had no clue he'd use it to bribe your mom's nurse aide."
